A season that harnesses the next generation of WA talent, sharing a magical story that will remind you of the beauty of nature and the power of friendship.
Presented in association with the AWESOME Festival, Co3 Contemporary Dance, WA Youth Orchestra and WA Young Voices.
The Nightingale is an opera for young people, performed by young people, for all to enjoy. Based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, the opera tells of an Emperor who is enchanted by the singing of a nightingale in his garden. The Emperor convinces the nightingale to sing for him but when he is gifted a mechanical nightingale, he becomes obsessed with his new toy and the real nightingale flies away.
Struck down by illness and with his mechanical nightingale now broken, the Emperor begs the nightingale to return and sing for him again. She agrees, but on the condition that she is allowed to sing for all the people.

What is a relaxed performance?
A relaxed performance is aimed at creating a welcoming environment designed for but not limited to audiences with autism, sensory and communication needs and learning disabilities. At a relaxed performance, audiences are allowed to move around and make noise within reason when watching the performance. Conventional theatre rules are relaxed, and audiences are given permission to make themselves comfortable during the performance. Lighting and sound levels will be augmented to make the theatre experience more pleasant for audiences with sensory sensitivities. Front of House staff will also be trained to ensure they are equipped to facilitate a welcoming environment for audiences.
What can I expect?
- Theatre doors will remain open throughout the performance
- Lighting will be dimmed
- Sound will be moderated
- Pacing areas will be situated at the back of the auditorium in both the Stalls and Dress Circle
- A Quiet Area with bean bags and art materials will be available for audiences who may want to leave the auditorium to relax. The performance will be streamed live in the Quiet Area so they do not miss out on the performance.
- Audiences may exhibit comfort behaviors such as fidgeting, stimming, pacing, rocking or make noises during the performance
- Audience members are free to enter and exit the venue throughout the performance

Content Warnings
The opera contains a reference to Death. This will be represented through offstage singing and use of light/dark shadows on stage.

His Majesty’s Theatre will be operating under the mandated 2 square metre rule however physical distancing will not be enforced. This means:

- You could be seated directly next to people from outside your group.
- There will be several unoccupied seats in every seating level to comply with the capacity limits.
- There will be a strict limit on the number of audience members allowed in the theatre.
His Majesty’s Theatre and West Australian Opera have COVID-19 Safety Policies in place to maintain your safety at the theatre. These efforts include:
- The completion of a COVID safety plan.
- Hand sanitiser stations readily available.
- Ongoing frequent deep cleaning regimes across all areas of the venue.
- COVID19 safety trained staff in all areas.
- Distanced markers for queuing.
