What we do

When words fail, music speaks – Hans Christian Anderson

Music offers an arena where students can truly be themselves, where they are allowed to exist in their own skin and express themselves, free of judgement or limitation. At West Australian Opera, a core part of our mission is to create opportunities for young people to be able to explore their imagination and creative capabilities in safe and inclusive environments. We seek to introduce them to the wonderful world of Opera through our productions as well as through our specialised programs and workshops.

Participating in arts activities is proven to have a positive effect on self-esteem, self-confidence, resilience, relationship building and social connection. The arts give young people a voice and create a place where they can feel like they belong.

The challenges students are faced with in today’s world, particularly post-COVID, are the likes of which we’ve never seen, and the impact of these challenges is clear in the ways their mental and physical health is being affected.

This is where the arts become invaluable in young people’s lives.

In 2024, we have a range of Operas which we would encourage all young people to attend. These productions align with Western Australian curriculum in numerous ways, and we offer reduced ticket prices for school bookings.

We also have a variety of school-based music and production workshops designed to create a multisensory environment for students to engage and participate in arts activities alongside their peers. By creating an inclusive, safe, and active space, with a focus on mental health and emotional wellbeing, these workshops are beneficial to students of all interests and abilities.

As well as this, we have a collection of community-based education programs on offer in 2024, such as our Wesfarmers Arts Singing Classes.
Through the power of music, we strive to do our part to help young West Australians and positively contribute to the West Australian educational landscape.

Every one of our education programs has direct overarching links to West Australian Curriculum.
